interesting piece... a bit misdirected... liberalism in protestantism rose in parallel to secularism and the liberal welfare state... before any neocons get their panties in a snit... the term liberal welfare state is used in the Lockean tradition of the secular nation state entering into a social contract with its citizens offering a semblance of protection and social welfare (ie. public schools, public safety, constitutional protections et al......) in exchange for consent to be governed.... Calvinism rose as an expression of an emerging economic power of the class of capitalists freed from the fetters of feudal/theocratic rule... Methodism, the Anabaptists and Quakerism gave further voice to religions freed from state control by articulating a social mission of protestantism to address disparities in wealth distribution.... as the article states... individual conscience and a personal relationship with God... stale dogma... and an ossified social structure of the papal parish was also a driver of liberalism in the mainline denominations.... its a bit ironic as the Catholic Church in its drive to become more politically conservative adopts evangelical themes and practices to blunt populist pentecostalism that is eroding its membership in the USA and Latin America... First Things the bastion of Catholic Conservatism... with an agenda....
