is angry with the darned highway department. They decided to pace a main route through town. After working in the antiques shop until 6:00 p.m., when I drove home, or rather when I attempted to drive home, I was prohibited from turning right onto Saunders Blvd. My road is about a half mile down Saunders on the right. So I continued straight until the next major road to the right, veered off that to the right as soon as possible, hoping it might connect with Saunders. Alas. It didnt it lead, in fact, to a dead end. For the next 90 minutes, in the dark, meandering over poorly-marked winding roads, I managed to return to the shop from which Id begun this trek, but I didnt get home. Im angry because the highway department had not marked a clear detour. Do they just assume that everyone driving on U.S. 1 is a longtime resident rather than a newcomer? Earlier at the antiques shop Id met several people visiting from afar, one from South Carolina, two kafirs from Georgia, bad another man from some 85 miles away. I had one tiny piece of information from which to work. I recalled from a visit here on 1985, that Indiana Ave. in Southern Pines would lead to Bethesda Rd. Good. Now, could I remember how to find Indiana Ave.? On the third major attempt to find a good detour from that road block, I did manage to find Saunders Blvd. from the other direction. That fortuitous result had nothing to do with math skills or memory for road names. More than once I turned on to Fort Bragg Blvd. when what Id wanted was Bethesda. All in all, the return home from the antiques shop, normally only two miles from my house, took about 75 to 90 minutes. Was I wrong in my expectation for the posting of normal detour signs? I picture the highway dept. employees chuckling over their pizza and beer tonight about how many residents theyd sent on a wild goose chase. I think they met up with the folks who write package inserts with directions for anything. Oh, for example, for my Smart clock radio. I need to deal with that next, to change to Daylight Savings Time.
