is gob-smacked. Did what I think just happened actually just happen? Yesterday evening. I pull a pile of stuff out of the dumpsters at the storage unit, and advertise it on Gumtree Freebies. It includes a laptop bag with a bunch of foreign plugs and power cords. A guy responds to my ad telling me off. Says it was probably a stolen laptop and maybe I should have taken it to the police instead. I politely reply that its not stolen, its just some lazy arse moving out of their storage unit who cant be bothered trying to find a home for stuff. That unfortunately it happens here all the time. That Im just trying to stop the waste. Another email lands in my inbox from him. Oh, you wanna lecture me some more huh? Cmon. Mess with me. I dare ya. He apologizes profusely, and tells me how much he hates waste too. So much so that hes currently demolishing a house by hand so as not to waste the materials. I reply great, I want to build a Tiny House and Im thinking of doing it with an old caravan, as that way you get the trailer and the appliances/12 volt lighting, for about the same price or less as just a trailer would cost. I joke that now I know where to go for help with taking it apart by hand to preserve the materials. He doesnt know what a Tiny House is. When he finds out he says its very cool, and would be easy enough to build, and offers to help me build it. Plus hell have a house lot of aluminium cladding for it once hes finished demolishing his house. His dad is currently re-modelling a caravan, and hes sure Dad will be happy to teach me anything he can. He (the son) should have land soon, which Im more than welcome to use. In the meantime, he knows enough people with space enough at their place to host the Tiny House build, and they wouldnt mind at all. And when he finds out Im living on the streets, he says Im more than welcome to park at their place (hes living in the half-finished caravan in his dads driveway) and make use of the amenities. He invites me around for dinner to meet the family and talk about it. Just like that. Somebody, pinch me. Obviously Ill proceed with a healthy dose of caution. But I did tell the Universe a little while back that it would be so cool if land just appeared out of nowhere, with a hilarious story of how it came to be, to go with it. And um, this situation does seem to fit that bill. Its certainly the best telling off Ive ever had, I must say! Stay tuned. Keep your fingers crossed. And hope like hell I dont hit my head on anything on the way down to the floor if it turns out to be for real.
