is pleased to have put a tiny smear of chilli powder on nearly all the walnuts, using Vaseline to hold it there. This is a tried and tested way of protecting my crop from squirrels, which detest chilli. However, I have a new way of doing it; I have used a spoon wedged into the end of a bamboo pole, and just dabbed a tiny splodge on each nut, and didnt need to clamber dangerously in the tree, but simply used my 6m freestanding stepladder. Ive left it late, as if you do it early, the vaseline/chilli damages the nut underneath.
