it is very interesting that Krishnamurti from his own indian context should have reached this conclusion. This idea is the very basis of the French version of secularism. We prohibit any sign of outward / outside discrimination, difference, distinction which would define citizens not as citizens, all equal before the law, but as members of a denomination. Hence the prohibition of the burqa -but also of any obtrusive religious distinctive signs. Because the history of France has shown us that this leads to VIOLENCE. Wars of Religion have hit our country, like many European countries, in the XVIth and XVIIth centuries, with a vengeance. Our national brand of secularism, laïcité, is the outcome of those internecine wars -real wars, which some historians say cost France 3 milions lives, to be compared to the then 30 million population. Hence our tradition that there is no BLASPHEME in our law, every religion is liable to caricature and criticism, provided that there is no incitation to hatred against other citizens. In order to ensure civil peace, we have put those principles above the idea of religious belief.
