its high time we indians grew up and realised that saare jahanse achha makes great patriotic poetry , but india is not really the centre of the universe . the world knows as much or as less about us as we know about the world . do you know which american basketball player or baseball player is a legendary figure with all-time highest scoress in his sport ? can you name the current world heavyweight champion boxer ? if you cant , then stop this stupid patriotic hurt if maria sharapova doesnt know who sachin is . its a tendency we have as a people . once i was in pune to celebrate the 80th birthday of the great p.l. deshpande and i was sitting with the legendary r.k. laxman in the green room of balgandharva auditorium , waiting for our interview by shri kumar ketkar to begin . dr shriram lagu , walked in , was greeted respectfully by all of us who knew him , and then he was introduced to mr laxman as dr sriram lagu . after he left , mr laxman asked who was that gentleman ? what doctor is he ? and all the proud maharashtrians almost had an epileptic fit that mr laxman didnt know dr lagu . what sort of general knowledge does mr laxman have ? so surprising they commented . i asked them , do you know who dilip and jay ram are ? they didnt . never heard these names , they said . i said they are the leading superstars of malyalam cinema . the point being , there is no harm not knowing great figures out of your radar , but its stupid to feel affronted if others dont know about your icons .
