its not cool for men to talk about caring about each other. at this stage in life, though, who gives a damn about cool. I have been given so much life by so many guys who have simply accepted Lou as their friend. I had dinner with a guy tonight who I love like a brother. He was working in New York on 911. I could not reach him. I drove to his house and when he answered the door, I could not hold back the tears. We have been friends for over 20 years. He went to Notre Dame. I went to Ribault. We have the same fight song. Because of him i went to a Notre Dame experience--football game. Steve Thomas is a great guy. He is a fighter for our cause. In our other other life, I ran the rail road and he had the candle in the belfry. he puts up with my attention deficit disorder and I his and the fact that he is color blind and still thinks that he is an iron man. its just so damn cool to have a friend like steve and harold, and mark and cozell and the list goes on. they all accept me--in spite of me. it gives me the strength to go on. I was moved to comment on this point because of my memory of my dear friend, Lerone Bennett III. some things you never get over. so, i thought its better to say it now before any more of us pass on. Finally, in loving memory of my Uncle Charlie Byrd. my first. hero. always love you uncle charlie. always.
