jammit 21 Answers to last weeks questions may include The State of Queensland, THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA and No, a greedy dog that bites the hand that feeds it. This week I’ll address three questions. Why jammit? Jammit is an organized and structured social occasion whereby experienced and the not so experienced musicians get to rub shoulders and play in front of a live audience. The focus of the event is on the musicians and whatever audience is present is there at their own musical risk. A core group of capable musicians pledge their time each session and may be asked to back anyone doing any song in any style in any key. Frequently more than one core instrument person is onsite so a dedicated bass player, drummer etc calls the shots for that session. A core member takes the responsibility of coordinating the sequence of acts and advises of time allocation depending on the number of performers who nominate before 6:30pm. All persons involved do so voluntarily. Musicians like to jam and others like to listen. It’s a win win situation. Why the political remarks? I cannot comment on the why for national security reasons. I’ll use the following three quotes instead. 1. "If the people knew what we had done, they would chase us down the street and lynch us." -- George HW Bush June 1992, re Iraq-gate and Iran-contra 2."I will always fight for progress and reform, never tolerate injustice or corruption, always fight demagogues of all parties, never belong to any party, always oppose privileged classes and public plunderers, never lack sympathy with the poor, always remain devoted to the public welfare, never be satisfied with merely printing news, always be drastically independent, never be afraid to attack wrong, whether by predatory plutocracy or predatory poverty." -- Joseph Pulitzer, April 10, 1907 3. “The Reichstag … uhm ... I never owned a box of matches in 1933.” Adolph Hitler 1934 . Why the humour? I have an uncle who always asks me “was it you or your brother who was killed in the war”. He can never remember. I intentionally confuse him by sometimes saying it was me and at other times by saying it was my brother. I’ve done it for so long now even I can’t remember who was actually killed. Why the humour? … you may well ask. John Lynn
