jimstoppani/home/articles/lighten-up?preview Matt here. Have a read of this. Ive seen this shared today by people i respect and indeed this is an interesting article. One of the better ones ive seen. It presents some scientific argument around rep range principles. But i have some solid opinions around it. See if you agree... 1 - It speaks a lot at first about the benefit of higher rep ranges and the recruitment of fast twitch and slow twitch fibers, as if the high rep range idea is the answer to all of our questions. 2 - It then however goes back to the idea that actually higher rep rangers only tend to be better if you always train to failure and if they are compared to very low 4-6 rep ranges which are also performed to failure 3 - It THEN says that actually a 12 rep range is probably best, providing multiple sets are all performed to failure 4 - Finally it tells us what i think most of us already know, that lower rep ranges to failure will also promote strength gain, and higher rep ranges to failure will also promote muscle endurance. It goes to back up what ive always thought and still stand by...and indeed what people have started to think are old ideas, but ones which i think are true; 1 - Lower reps for strength 2 - Higher reps for endurance 3 - mid reps for hypertrophy (muscle building) 4- I have personally recently enjoyed working to the higher rep range BUT THE BOTTOM LINE!!! THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER WHATEVER YOU DO..... LEAVE IT ALL IN THE GYM! You must, must work to failure. Or in other words, dont expect results if you dont work hard. You should be crawling, dragging yourself out of the gym after a session if you want the best results. At the end of this article you will then see that he suggest rep ranges should be varied. Another example of us all looking for a magic answer then realising that the only way to success is a mixture of all principles. In other words, keep changing things up, Again, common sense.. keep experimenting, keep asking questions, listen to and understand your own body, look to people who inspire you and ask questions of them too. They may be experts in the field, or they may be your friends..people you train along side all of the time. Walk into the gym and want to learn! About your body and about what others have done in order to succeed. And enjoy yourself. Every day you should be looking to find another new interesting way to train.
