journalist Masuk Hridoy attacked in Brahmanbaria took primary treatments at Sadar Hospital Our Correspondent, Brahmanbaria The Dhaka Tribunes correspondent of Brahmanbaria district Mashuk Hridoy along with two other journalists has received injuries in an attack by the regional passport office brokers near Purba Medda area of the district town on Monday. The other injured journalists are--Jabed Rahim Bijon of Independent Television and Shafiqul Islam Swapon of local daily Sarood. Mashuk took primary treatments at Bramhanbaria Sadar Hospital. Injured journalist Shafiqul Islam Swapon said: “The authorities of regional passport office closed their operations from last two weeks which extracted furry on local people.” “Acting on information, we went there to cover the story. Suddenly, broker Nasir Mia, older brother of District unit Chhatra League President Masum Billah, came to the spot along with his armed cadres and threatened to kill us waving his pistol. He staved off the cameras and snatched laptop bags from us.” “At one stage, Nasir punched Masuk in his chest, kicked him and hit his head and neck with pistol-butt, leaving him injured. Later, Nasir also fired some blank shots,” added the journalist. Hearing the hue and cry, locals rushed in and rescued the journalists, said the witnesses. Later, the injured correspondent of the Dhaka Tribune lodged a case with Brahmanbaria Sadar police station in this connection. Asked why the brokers attacked the journalists, Masuk said: “The broker gang led by Nasir takes extra money from the passport seekers, showing them various causes during the closure of the passport office.” “The clouser of the regional passport office always makes the brokers benefited. So, they attacked us as we were making news on the issue.” Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tapas Ranjan Ghosh told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have been informed about the attack and a special drive will be launched to arrest the accused.” Before stopping the operations, the regional passport office authorities hanged the notice: “The regular operation of the office had been halted since December 30 as the MRP (Machine Readable Passport) server crashed due to an electric sort circuit.”
