just finishing up my lunch break, thought id post this. This morning as I was getting ready for work, for some reason, the thought occurred to me: if we were to ever change our name and/or the appearance of our church, what would we call it, and what would we want it to look like? Now, I have no plans whatsoever of trying to change those things; it was simply a random thought. But as I meditated on it, I asked myself, “What name or sort of building would really capture the heart and vision of GCF?” Along with that, I thought about what kind would not. Can you guess which is which? “M.C.C.” (Mangum Country Club) would be elegant; it would have big screens (with ESPN, HGTV, and Food Network), a coffee shop (with a spiritual name like “Java Jireh”), a back nine, drinks (with a limit, of course), valet parking, a spa, and a pool, all in an effort to draw a huge crowd. Your “Life Coach” would be dressed in the coolest, hippest clothes, use little scripture, and give a short sermonette so that no one misses their tee time. There would be a couple of advantages to MCC: we would probably get the big crowd were trying for; and secondly, we would be considered no threat to the enemy and would probably be fairly safe. “Ft. Mangum”, on the other hand, would be camod out; there would be training in spiritual weaponry, strategic military exercises, strict adherence to the handbook (the bible), lessons in discipline, an emphasis on loyalty and commitment, and an ultimate goal of producing soldiers that are ready to go out onto the battlefield and engage the enemy. Your “trainer” would be dressed in fatigues, have camo paint on his face, would teach from the manual (the bible), and wouldnt stop until the training was complete. After all, what you learn here may save your life. There are, of course, some disadvantages to this church: we might not get/keep big numbers because of our intensity; and secondly, we would be considered a huge threat to the enemy, thus becoming one of his primary targets. In this little “what if” game, you must choose one or the other...you cannot have both; because spiritual soldiers and members of religious country clubs dont really have anything in common. So which would you want to call “home”: the “fort”...or the “club”?
