just found article about "Contemporary Art in Myanmar" Myanmar’s true contemporary Burmese art exists outside the world of galleries. To get a grasp of this one has to reach Moe Satt, who lives with his father in a rundown apartment building a few blocks from the river. The performance artist, Moe Satt, 30, is now an advisor and curator in places as far apart as New York and Seoul. Moe’s show at Bangkok’s H Project Space Gallery in December 2011 revealed new and surprising dimensions to the Myanmar Art Scene. Moe Satt believes things are just beginning for contemporary art. The political winds have changed so there is an obvious interested in political art, but this means pressure to producing adequate commentary, and therein lies the problem, he believes. ‘Before an image of Aung San was enough to make a radical statement, but today artists needs to be more sophisticated,’ say Moe Satt. ‘We were not really dealing with social issues before, so we don’t always know the best way of putting ideas across. We need to think of what kind of society we want to be’. Moe helped fellow artist Thu Myatt organise events such as the South East Asian Urban Art which, influenced by hip-hop, brought together graffiti artists from around the region. His own annual festival of regional performance art he has cannily named, ‘Beyond Pressure’, as an indication of his view that Myanmar ‘does not need to change too fast just because others think we should’.
