just recalled, for no apparent reason, something random out of the blue during this rough, tumultuous, emotional week: I suddenly remember a time back in the 80s when I dropped off my elderly cat, Tchotchka, with my mom for cat-sitting while I was out of town. Per the vet’s instructions, my mother was supposed to feed the old gal only a special prescription dry food that the poor thing, frankly, didn’t like very much. When I returned from my trip, I was furious to find that my mother had been feeding Tchotchka can-after-can of store-bought wet food, which the cat loved. Sure the cat seemed super happy, but it was forbidden! “But her little life is so short and simple,” my mom explained. “Why deny her something that gives her such pleasure?” I melted. For some reason this story feels profound to me. Not sure exactly why. Maybe it’s this: OUR little lives are ALSO short and simple. Don’t deny yourself what makes you happy. Don’t ignore the small pleasures, the simple, sweet joys. Or perhaps it’s this: Why be miserable doing what you’re “supposed” to do? Do what you love, even if everyone tells you its a bad idea. Or maybe the point is just that a bowl of dry crumbly crap sucks compared to something your grandma serves you.
