kayasthas visudh roop se kshatriya hai...they are ancient kshatriyas, as they are the direct son of king dharmaraj chitragupta ji, himself 17th manas putra of the creator brahma, kayasthas are having brahmanical features also....they are known as brahmakayastha and rajanaya kshatriya kayasthas.....most of ancient kingdoms were ruled by present day kayasthas......later on they merged in administrative services as administrators of many kingdoms . In ancient time kshatriya varna was divided into two parts 1) millitary service 2) administrative service......even today a country or kingdom is based on its millitary power n administrative power.....kshatriya who promoted to administrations were later known as kayasthas, by the time they formed a caste. more or less kayasthas is a community of intellectual kshatriyas Assigning kayastha name to Maharaja Chitragupta as he is born out of his kaya. Chitragupta is bearing a sword and is referred in rigveda as The King Of The Kings. Clearly the sign of a ruler and hence kshatriya. He also has the knowledge of all the upanishads, clearly a brahman.(One cannot simply decide the fate of souls without having these knowledge!!) For his sons, it is written in garuda purana as- After adorning with sacred threads(upanayan), they were sent to different places to rule. This clarifies that kayastha is a clan with dual-caste status(brahman & kshatriya), whose work is to rule judicially. They are not any scribes, otherwise maharaja chtraguptas work would have been to merely write the karma of everyone and someone else would have been the decision taking authority.
