last evening, saw the tactics that Arnab uses to prolong discussions in a manner that only the cacophony and vitriol rises while no substantive information or opinion forms..... T M Krishna has written a very good piece on this a couple of weeks back in the Sunday Hindu. The subject was the Srilankan judgement awarding death sentence to five fishermen. The object of Arnabs ridicule was Subramaniam Swamy . He first claimed that Swamy meets the Srilankan President as often as he wishes. Then he claimed possession of letters from Swamy to Modi implying that Swamy had supported the death sentence. Swamy called him a liar and persisted with this nomenclature through the discussion. At this point , Swamy challenged Arnab to produce letter. Arnab very condescendingly goes through a sheaf of papers claiming to be the letters and finding the para ( perhaps marked out by his prompters or back office) reads the same : transpires that Swamy has written to PM that the Srilanka - India treaty provides that in such matters, India can ask for the cases to be transferred to India and the case then heard and decided according to our laws. Now, when Arnab realised that he had blundered, instead of gracefully apologising,glossed over the matter, took the matter to the other pannelists and generally trying to drown Swamy in the cacophony. Not to be cowed down, Swamy persisted with read the letter , you Liar and Arnab would not. Then, Arnab caught on to the word liar and started by asking Swamy , why do you not know write to President Pakse who is your friend and tell him he is a liar because the charges are trumped up. This went on for another five minutes. he found one gentleman Raman who made known that there is no way out except to follow the diplomatic route which the Govt is already doing effectively etc... Immediately he was dismissed as rooting for Swamy . There was another campaigner for the Fishermen , who was then egged on to condemn Swamy which he did to Arnabs full satisfaction . Poor Nachiappan, a lawyer, did not have anything tangible to say. Such are the Rajya Sabha members Sonia G nominates. I wish more people treat Arnab with the contempt that Swamy has for this man and do wish that this man gets the same level of abuse that he causes on his hapless panel and the audience at large. Actually, what we get to see everynight is one format of Big Boss with political figures being flogged. Pity good talent is being put to such despicable use. And, the irony, channel after channel want clones in all their shows !!!!
