last night we had a private party at the gallery. interesting folks. many questions about firecat and what we do. everyone seemed to be relaxed and enjoyed themselves. my surprise was a long conversation with one guest who among his many skills is being a bass guitar player. in discussing our inclinations of musical tastes, he revealed a note about his past. besides playing with several local legends, he was at some point the bass player in ernie terrells band, the knockouts. there arent many spoken lines that immediately get my eyes widening. he played vegas with the act being an opening act for ray charles. during off times he played chess with ray who used a special braille set. the stories went on as we talked about various adventures. what started out as a simple event at the gallery turned into a very engaging conversation. when i returned home, leo was impressed by the stories. vito asked about the drinks served. ella smelled around my pant cuffs hoping to figure out any food leftover possibilities. i explained that the next exhibition(black and white photo essay of nelson algren living in the area by art shay for life magazine) is getting a lot of interest. people are calling and asking about the details concerning the photographs. it will be an odd contrast of the images in these photos with the state of the neighborhood now. the place across the street is presently being gutted for renovation. it is a place that is over a hundred years old. i dont know what is was when first build but i suspect it was a polish bakery for at least sixty years. then a plant and flower shop for the last fifteen or so. the tile work and tin ceiling is being torn apart and hauled away to the dump. there are not many places that still had retained its semi original interiors. this is another one gone. there is still enough exteriors of original buildings to retain some sort of feel that resembles the images in the photos. im hoping to hearing more of the history about the area during the course of this exhibition. it will be good to learn more before its all disappeared.
