last nights Hollwood Bowl concert was amazing - ive been lucky to see Herbie Hancock play many times in different contexts all over the world and last night would be up there with my other favorite Herbie show (1996 in Sydney where he played trio with Kenny Davis and Gene Jackson smashing it on the drums). last nights concert was with full orchestra led by Vince Mendoza and James Genus and Vinnie Colaiuta holding down the rhythm section. such beautiful arrangements of so many Herbie classics - moody, cinematic, evocative and sublime. highlights for me were renditions of Sonrisa, an epic harmonic reworking of Footprints and pretty much every moment that Herbie put his hands to the piano. grateful to get to experience that in person and continuing to be constantly inspired by a living legend and master of his art and craft. hats off to Mr Hancock! (and thank you Leigh Ann Hahn!) side note - there were murmurs close to us of some people getting bored and clearly not understanding the depth of beauty and artistry in much of what they were hearing. i know that a lot of people arent used to hearing instrumental music - or music without the beats banging right up front - but hopefully some part of what they heard last night snuck through their defenses and embedded in their deeper understanding to plant seeds for more...
