leo was working last night at a fancy church on michigan avenue here in town. it was a special holiday concert by a singing group, chanticleer in this over a hundred year old building. it was clearly the longest time leo has ever spent in a church. the fellow usher he was working with was concerned about thunderbolts striking him down when he entered the main part of the building. he started to reveal his spotty past to leo before starting in an almost confessional tone. leo was surprised to hear these sorted stories of various adventures from his youth. leo found himself staring in disbelieve. he would interject comments like, really? or you did that? . the fellow usher would pause, smile and say,oh yeah then continue on. fortunately jail time was never a coda to these tales. leo told him that when he entered the main part of the church that if he should dissolve to dirt and a red jacket to sweep him up and take the dust back to the hallway in hopes he returns to human form. both made it through the whole performance but leo noticed his other usher staring around the ceiling. leo looked at the upcoming concerts in january on the program. one of his favorite pieces of music will be performed three times. he is hoping to work all three nights. he owns a couple of copies of prokofievs alexander nevsky and has watched the eisenstein film several times. the music carries the film in a way. it is a good film with wonderful camera work but does feature warriors wearing large trash can over the heads in battle scenes. he was humming the themes from the film music as he changed from his work clothes last night. there are a couple of jazz nights that caught his eye as well. on two separate nights, eddie palmieri and dianne reeves will grace the hall in january as well. as leo settled down with a drink on the coach with ella, he mused that several of the musicians on those nights will be doing some similar confessionals before entering the hall. he would love to hear their stories they have accumulated establishing their support levels in the world of jazz. its always the back up folks who have the best stories. mostly because theyre real. they have nothing to prove to anyone anymore.
