leprosy day has once again come and gone without a bang or a whimper in the land where it is most rampant. in brazil, a hideous and sickening historical alliance between a public health system rather bent on polarizing and cosmetic marketing initiatives than on effective detection and treatment policies, a pool of hygienist and segregationist municipal local authorities and public bodies, and an all-embracing and all-obstructing religious establishment that prey and parasitize upon the weakest of weak, these were all key factors in keeping the country as the single area in the whole western hemisphere where the disease is still prevalent, the country with the highest relative number of cases in the whole world, where even nations that have just recently emerged from crippling internal strife such as congo and mozambique have managed to eliminate the disease on national level in less than a decade, while brazil still holds the place of honor for the highest number of people permanently disabled as a result of misdiagnosis and lack of adequate treatment, even after a visit to the doctor. and all these factors are still at work and thriving, swallowing huge swathes of the public budget for masking and rebranding centuries old and brand new epidemics alike.
