lets take a moment and reflect on how amazing Guardians of the Galaxy is. this movie, honestly, is one of the greatest films ive ever seen in my life and has made its way into my top 5. it means a lot to me, and allow me to expound. it is a new generations Star Wars in a lot of ways. Now, I doubt that any film will ever have the legacy that A New Hope has. But what guardians offers, that is so resemblant to the original masterpiece, is an experience that is as vast as the universe. it takes characters that you dont have to have any pre-existing knowledge of, and it makes you fall in love with them. it takes you on a journey that makes you laugh, makes you cry, and makes you want to do it over and over again. it is a phenomenon. and yes, it stretches from the source material in moments, but even for as much of a nerd as i am, i could care less. what James Gunn has done, is capture a tone that simultaneously encapsulated the comics and tapped into what audiences wanted to see. Disney/Marvel took a gamble on an independent filmmaker that has never really known massive mainstream success and a roster of C-list characters. what they gained was a film that is scheduled to break the 2014 box office curse, the highest fan reviewed marvel film of all time, and the highest critically reviewed marvel movie since Iron Man. but there is something that makes this film special for me other than my love of the characters. 1) i know some people in it. and that is not a braggart thing it just adds a bit of sentiment to it. Zoe Saldana is the sweetest lady ever. Michael Rooker is a bad ass through and through. Stan Lee is truly the man. Seth Green is a hilarious guy with a big heart. James Gunn is a genius. And one of the highlights of my career is to be able to say that Lloyd Kauffman is in a movie me and Trevor directed. which leads me to 2) I grew up watching Troma. I grew up loving Disney, Universal Classic, and the shitty movies that came out of Jersey. James Gunn was a part of that. and to see where he is now... is an amazing amazing thing. it inspires me. his inclusion of Rob Zombie, Kauffman, Green, Fillion, Rooker, and proclivity towards odd casting choices like Chris Pratt...this man is defining his own path. A man who grew up on Star Wars got to make his own version. thats the goal. to work your ass off, make the things you want, make them by your own terms, the world will follow. and Gunn is living that. Good work sir, and thank you for inspiring me in a way i cant even describe.
