...like all religions, Christianity can be distorted and abused. In recent centuries evil men and women have made Christianity an ally of brutal military aggression, racism, hypocrisy, and thinly disguised greed...the marks of original sin are embedded in all institutions, Christianity included. When Christ calls someone to be His disciple, He calls him or her to follow Him, not the Christian religion. The gospel of Christ is not the gospel of Christianity. Promoting Christianity should not be a Christian’s interest...the God who revealed himself in Christ is the free, sovereign God. He is faithful to His own nature, revealed in Christ, but in His free activity He is not limited to the boundaries of Christianity. Barth had no interest in promoting Christianity as a superior religion, and neither should we. Let us not equate religion with revelation. Proclaiming the gospel of the free and living God is our mission. ---Al Truesdale in With Cords of Love: A Wesleyan Response to Religious Pluralism (Kindle Locations 1365-1377).
