liked these pearls from Edward Abbey: “There are some good things to be said about walking. Not many, but some. Walking takes longer, for example, than any other known form of locomotion except crawling. Thus it stretches time and prolongs life. Life is already too short to waste on speed. I have a friend who’s always in a hurry; he never gets anywhere. Walking makes the world much bigger and thus more interesting. You have time to observe the details.” “I find that in contemplating the natural world my pleasure is greater if there are not too many others contemplating it with me, at the same time.” “There are some places so beautiful they can make a grown man break down and weep.” Thanks for sharing, Skip Nichols. Ive hiked more than 300 miles in a single month on at least four different occasions and spent eighteen months in the back country in one three year stretch. Those were days never to be forgotten. If I could choreograph my own death, I would emerge from a deep moist canyon filled with blooming Columbine and Maidenhair fern. Up on top I would long to be surrounded by red sandstone under a blue cloudless sky. The sun would be blazing down. I would lie down on a flat rock and just slip away into warmth. Coyotes and ravens would eat my flesh. Months later, my children and grandchildren would make flutes from my bones and play music in a thunderstorm while they danced in the rain.
