m.youtube/watch?v=5HWLoFNzAcM Said and Cherif Kouachi, the killers of 12 innocent people at Charlie Hebdo, and Amedy Coulibaly, the executioner of four innocent Jews at a kosher supermarket in Paris, are children of Paris banlieux (slum-like suburbs), born out of a blind rage against a society perceived as inimical, alternatively called Capitalism, the West, globalization or Babylon in that inarticulate yet mind-numbing scream that is the hip hop of the banlieux. Before last weeks catastrophe struck in Paris I was talking on my wall about Isaac Lurias kabbalistic notions of Tzimtzum (the contraction of the Absolute in order to create the universe), Shevirat ha-Kelim (the shattering of the vessels -- or the trauma of existence) and finally the noblest of all notions: Tikkun Olam (healing of the world). I was about to discuss how the world could be healed when I, and the whole world, heard the deafening bang of the vessels shattering again. I broke up my discussion of Lurias teaching because I felt that posting messages of peace and of healing in the face of terror and madness was the most urgent thing. The traumatic events in Paris illustrated just how desperately the world (olam) needs tikkun (mending, healing). Olam is currently errupting and it spews out darkness and violence and fascism and horror. It is the mother of lost children, la mère des enfants perdus as this song is called. Millions of people demanded tikkun olam (healing of the world) all over France, all over Europe this Sunday. Before I present the great kabbalistic Masters proposal on healing I thought Ill take a pause and listen to that scream of the banlieux, the scream of a realm spewing out terrorists and cold-blood assassins, the scream of a mother whose children are lost.
