#mariasanchezSBCS Has everyone seen this bullshit “press release” from Lieutenant Rich Lawhead? If only the San Bernardino city shelter was truly this pleasant, well-kept and in compliance of the state laws as he claims in this piece of trash. Does he think the photos and videos of the suffering animals and the horrific living conditions I have sent them going on 2 years now are fake? That I have nothing better to do than harass them with false allegations? The biggest load of crap is that he failed to mention the fact that it was the rescues, fosters, pledgers and tireless networkers who are responsible for the shelters plummeting euthanasia rates. Here is the content of the press release: “Over the last few days the City of San Bernardino’s Animal Shelter has fallen into the media spotlight mainly because there are those individuals that believe the long established policies of the shelter are erroneous. Well in actuality, the shelter and its dedicated staff have done some amazing work with astronomical numbers of animals that have been abandoned and left to wander by those who care nothing about them. Owners of animals in our city and surrounding communities continually fail to properly spay and neuter their animals in an effort to help control the animal population. Others simply abandon their animals on the streets leaving the taxpayers the burden for caring for the animals. Since 2010 the numbers of euthanized animals has fallen from 74% to an all-time low of 40% of the 16045 animals that passed through the shelter in 2013. Yes, that is still a high number and officials would like to do more. Nevertheless, entire operation is in compliance with all of the laws governing the euthanizing of animals, such as California Penal Code 599 (d), which is the state law that governs the practice. Even with the high numbers the shelter continues to actively adopt approximately 8000 animals a year, that’s an average of about 500 animals a month that are processed through this local facility. Then there are others that attack the shelters condition and the overall living conditions the animals are placed in during their confinement at the facility. The shelter is not perfect but it is clean and continually maintained, while officials continue to research funding sources in an effort to either build a new facility or make some major capital improvements to the current shelter. Yet another question or should I say criticism that has been raised by the same group, is that the shelter is not following state and federal guidelines in the use of the various scheduled narcotics. All scheduled narcotics are logged in compliance with state/federal law, and have been inspected by the DEA, and all pharmaceuticals are used at the direction of a veterinarian. In the end, the employees of the facility are doing, and will continue to do, an incredible job with volume of animals that pass through the facility annually.
