So today, despite a moustache that may look weird and a little bit creepy, I am not ashamed in front of myself - I wear my moustache proud (but dont worry, I will shave it proudly when MOvember is done!). I have read a considerable amount of Nietzsches work, and although I dont necessarily prescribe to all of his worldviews, I do respect a man who challenges the status quo, who writes what he believes, and attempts to see the world in a way that no one has ever seen it before. Nietzsche embodies what MOvember is about: awareness - both of the nature of reality and of oneself. Nietzsche also represents the health issues that MOvember seeks to address. In the last few years of his life, he suffered from mental illness. Many people attempted to diagnose and treat him, but they all were unsuccessful. Some believed his mental illness was caused by syphilis while others meningitis. Another diagnosed him with dementia, but in the end none of the diagnoses led to successful treatment. Now, more than a hundred years later, we not only are challenged by Nietzsches ideas, but by the nature of his mental decline. One of MOvembers goals, is to address mental health - to remove the stigma, so those who need treatment will seek treatment, and so that the medical field will have the means to do the research and the means to treat men accordingly.
