A gap year gives students the space and freedom for personal growth and developing their interests, and volunteering is a popular option for those looking to make their year more worthwhile. The Global Gap program, run by international volunteer organization Projects Abroad, offers high school graduates an immersive international experience spanning three continents, five countries, and twelve different service opportunities. During their months of service work, students dedicate their time and energy to supporting meaningful projects while they increase their awareness of the world. Projects Abroad offers a range of projects for Global Gap volunteers to participate in, so students can explore new fields and expand their interests and practical skills continuously over their year of traveling. From human rights in South Africa to marine conservation in Thailand, there is a project to suit every volunteer. Our 2013-14 group, which had eight students, returned recently and we already have applicants ready to take their place in the fall. The class of 2014-15 will be our biggest group to date with fourteen students taking part so far. Its fantastic to see so many students using their gap year abroad for voluntary service in developing countries. About Global Gap The Global Gap itinerary includes: Sept. 26 – Oct. 11, 2014 (2 weeks): Orientation & Care in Accra, Ghana Oct. 12 – Dec. 13, 2014 (2 months): Building & Human Rights in Cape Town, South Africa Dec. 14, 2014 – Jan. 3, 2015: Winter Break Jan. 4 – Mar. 7, 2015 (2 months): Teaching in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Peru Mar. 8 – April 11, 2015 (1 month): Choice of Service Projects in Kathmandu, Nepal April 12 – May 9, 2015 (1 month): Diving and Marine Conservation in Krabi, Thailand The Global Gap program fee is $29,995 which includes all food and housing, medical and travel insurance, airport pick-up and drop off in each destination, as well as 24-hour support from trained Projects Abroad staff. The fee also includes all required plane tickets, as well as various sightseeing tours and activities in each destination.
