A gap year gives students the space and freedom for personal growth and developing their interests, and volunteering is a popular option for those looking to make their year more worthwhile. The Global Gap program, run by international volunteer organization Projects Abroad, offers high school graduates an immersive international experience spanning three continents, five countries, and twelve different service opportunities. During their months of service work, students dedicate their time and energy to supporting meaningful projects while they increase their awareness of the world. Projects Abroad offers a range of projects for Global Gap volunteers to participate in, so students can explore new fields and expand their interests and practical skills continuously over their year of traveling. From human rights in South Africa to marine conservation in Thailand, there is a project to suit every volunteer. Global Gap aims to provide a highly diverse volunteer experience, and that attracts a lot of students to the program, says Terri Ball, a Program Advisor for Projects Abroad USA. Our 2013-14 group, which had eight students, returned recently and we already have applicants ready to take their place in the fall. The class of 2014-15 will be our biggest group to date with fourteen students taking part so far. Its fantastic to see so many students using their gap year abroad for voluntary service in developing countries. After a few years just sending volunteers to Eastern Europe for teaching, the company expanded to sending volunteers of all ages around the world on a wide range of projects. Projects Abroad is a global leader in short-term international volunteer programs with projects in 29 countries and recruitment offices in the UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Holland, Hong Kong, Norway, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and the United States.
