more from the wayback machine: Drove out to CalArts this afternoon and ran into Kaprow. At the College Art Association conference in Chicago, the year before we arrived in LA, he had said that he was moving to Southern California to become a playboy. During his well attended lecture, packed with art teachers and would be art teachers, I wondered if he was serious. He was. Today he is Dean at Cal Arts and living in a Pasadena mansion. CalArts is so new they are just beginning to move in. Think NASA of the art world. One assumed that Kaprow was speaking with irony about becoming a playboy, but the Wrigley Mansion is definitely Playboyesque. There were, however, Kaprow kids running around the pool, no babes but ours. (I hate the first-person possessive-case when writing about women who were with me, especially when I use a taboo word like “babes”. My wife, my husband, my babe, my man…. What am I babbling about? Since Ms Magazine, one cannot speak of gender without considering first the feminist reaction. Terminologies are changing as well as behavioral codes. It is very cool but not so easy to navigate. Vaughn Rachel’s work was some of the earliest of what was obliquely becoming Feminist Art in caps. I knew Vaughn Rachel from the mail, and never associated her with Kaprow. I associated her with Eleanor Antin and Mary Ashley, Barbara Smith.
