mpcourier/article/20150120/DCO/150118346 SLC boys skate past Saranac Lake; Canton denies Salmon River in OT PUBLISHED: TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2015 The St. Lawrence Central boys hockey team skated to convincing matinee non-league win on the road over Saranac Lake while Salmon River suffered a hard-fought NAC interdivisional loss to Canton Central in overtime at the Canton Pavilion Monday night in the only two matchups slated for Martin Luther King Day. SLC 6, Saranac Lake 1: At Saranac Lake, the Larries worked their way to a 2-0 lead through the first two periods before breaking the game open with three goals over the final 7:13 of the third. Jack Pullano opened the scoring 9:18 into the game off an assist from Nick Kowalchuk. Luke Peets doubled the lead at 5:33 of the second period by finishing off a play set up by Kody Kocsis and Kowalchuk. Lukas Arquiett put the Larries ahead 3-0 at the 4:30 mark of the third period assisted by Nate Stickney before the Red Storm got on the board when Zach Ellsworth broke through for an unassisted game just over a minute later. Hadyn St. Hilaire restored the three-goal lead at 7:47 assisted by Arquiett and Stickney. Ian Bressett made it 5-1 at the 9:38 mark on a play set up by Trent Dow and Luke Collins. Kocsis closed out the scoring when he converted off an assist from Stickney with 3:15 left in regulation. Nate Burnett turned aside 14 shots backstopping the win while Justin Farmer posted 45 saves in the losing cause. The Larries, who claimed their third high school tournament title of the 2014-15 season and took over sole possession of the NAC Division II lead with a 4-3 win over host Norwood-Norfolk at the Icemen Tournament this past Saturday, improved to 14-1 overall with Monday afternoon’s win and will put their 9-1 league record on the line this Friday night when they host Salmon River Central at the Tri-Town Arena starting at 7 p.m. Canton 4, Salmon River 3 (OT): The visiting Shamrocks set the stage for the upset after building a 2-0 lead on a pair of second-period goals but the Golden Bears staged a furious comeback in the third where they took the lead midway through before Salmon River battled back to force an overtime that ended with just 3.8 seconds left. Sean David got the Shamrocks on the board first after producing a power play goal off assists fron Tehakwirakarenrons McDonald and Tyren Boots at 10:43 of the second period. Jacob Cook made it 2-0 with 34 seconds left assisted by David. Senior Cody Moore sparked the Bears’ comeback, controlling a loose puck along the right boards near centerice then racing into the Salmon River zone before wristing a shot into the top right from the face-off circle just 12 seconds into the third period. Three minutes later, sophomore blueline Mark Mahoney skated in from the left point and converted on a centering pass from the right wing for a power play goal that knotted the score at 2-2. Cole Zeller gave the Bears their first lead of the night when he fired the puck into the top of net from the top of the right face-off circle to finish off a play set up by Mattice and Mahoney. The Shamrocks silenced the Canton faithful with 3:48 left in regulation when Tanner Tarbell knocked home the rebound of a shot from the right point by Tyler Sisto to tie the game with Boots drawing the second assist on the equalizer. The Bears opened the ensuing five-minute overtime with a player in the penalty box serving the remainder of a four-minute major penalty for boarding assessed with two seconds left in regulation. After producing several good shorthanded scoring chances before ultimately killing the penalty, the Bears fashioned the game-winner when a wild goalmouth scramble created a loose puck at the right side of the crease and Andrew McCormick was there to stuff it home. Moore and Huber were credited with assists. Junior Jake Facey stood tall working the Canton crease for 38 saves as the Bears improved to 3-0 in the NAC. Jarrad Jackson stopped 29 shots for the Shamrocks (4-8, 2-7) who are slated to host NAC Division II rival Tupper Lake tonight at the Tom Cavanaugh Arena starting at 6:30 p.m.
