Selangor MB crisis: Khalid Samad met lawyers ‘to get to the bottom’ of Bank Islam deal BY RAHMAH GHAZALI PETALING JAYA: Shah Alam PAS MP Khalid Samad met Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahims lawyers recently in an apparent attempt to get the mentri besar’s side of story over his out of court settlement with Bank Islam involving a RM70mil loan. Confirming that a private meeting took place, the Selangor PAS deputy commissioner, however, denied a rumour that he was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and chose to keep it from the partys senior leaders. It is not true that I am happy with the lawyers explanation, but I will give them time to respond to my queries, he told The Star Online on Tuesday. He, however, refused to divulge the details of the meeting that was held last Saturday and said a media statement would be made if the response continued to be unsatisfactory. I am giving them a few days to respond. I will call a press conference after that to clarify what happened in the meeting, he said. One of the mentri besars lawyers, Derek Fernandez also refused to reveal the details of the meeting. As a solicitor, I am bound to legal professional privilege. I can be disbarred for making statements on matters that are privileged, he said when contacted. When asked if they would arrange another meeting with Khalid Samad, who is also the PAS central committee member, Fernandez said, I have no instruction at the moment. Khalid Samad has been vocal in calling the embattled MB, who is now an independent after being sacked from PKR, to explain the Bank Islam deal in detailed to prove there was nothing fishy. He also asked Khalid Ibrahim to clarify what role Tan Sri Rashid Manaf, who was a lawyer of former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, played in the settlement deal that was made last February. This court case was one of the dossiers made public by PKR after his refusal to step down as mentri besar and give way to Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to take over. Khalid Ibrahim was subsequently sacked from PKR and eventually lost PAS support. PAS was the only Pakatan Rakyat component party who chose to back him at the start of the crisis.
