:: my 2ps worth, on the following doing rounds - wired/autopia/2014/03/mh370-electrical-fire/ im no expert, its just hat , the author has pinged everything on one failure theory, and everything past that makes a lot of sense, just that the failure itself doesnt. a mechanical failure in a plane is always a black swan event, its not one thing, its a combo of failures of 0 probability, standalone, happening together which causes a failure capable to bring a plane down. His mention of hot and heavy airplane is completely irrelevant, a hot and heavy 777 is a 777 that flies a 16 hour non stop flight between Delhi and Chicago, and takes off in Delhi when temp is 40C+, not a 777 for a 6 hour hop in 26C weather. Secondly, his mention of a DC8 crash is completely preposterous, DC8s were built between 1958 and 1972, youre looking a plane that was built 60 years ago, and even in that case, it was a plane taking off in Saudi Arabia, desert summer, and the captain ignored warnings of low nitrogen levels in 2 tyres and ignored several subsequent warnings/signs after that, it was differential loading followed by heavy friction with the runway that finally caused the fire, which burnt hydraulics and electric circuits, a 777 is perhaps a million times more sophisticated, which explains why all countries and investigators have ruled out a mechanical failure. Most importantly, if there was a pre-existing mechanical issue with the plane, it would have been the first thing the investigators would have checked with the ground engineers. Yes this theory makes more sense than aliens, but im afraid thats all it does.
