my dad use to say the rolling stock of oil tankers was one of rail cars he would most articulately inspect. i dont know how many times he wrote up cars and had them taken out of service, but i learned what to look for,, tank cars that carried other kinds of toxic chemicals just as important,, the real tragedy is, transportation by rail, can be safer than by truck, if proper protocols are followed,, by far safer, he use to advocate strongly all rail lines transporting some kinds of materials must meet certain standards or those chemicals could not be transported on that line.. train with oil cars, must follow exact protocol at all railroad crossings, etc.
