...my fundamental ambivalence concerning both the Church and the medical profession takes its force from my lived experience of trusting both where they presented themselves as wise, authoritative, and trustworthy in matters where I have been out of my depth and really vulnerable...my trust and deference to their respective conventional wisdoms in these cases has literally brought me close to death and insanity on several occasions...while their general refusal to acknowledge accountability for encouraging such trust and dependence on their counsel has created unnecessary pain and discouragement, along with being pressured to feel guilty and personally liable for having believed them and trusted their guidance...such is life...
