my younger friends want to know what it was like in the 60s.. mostly, i remember people dying more, and younger too. we didnt have medical science to keep em ticking over. also, people werent aware of the effect their lifestyle choices had on their health. for example, when i was a kid my biggest hero ever was mickey mantle. he was a hero for my parents generation too, but for different reasons: they knew him as the ultimate athlete sophisticate ... out there in mid field with a baseball mitt and a martini. i think when he died a few years back of liver failure people were genuinely surprised. if you had cancer you were dead. there were no cancer survivors. John Wayne. Others like Ian Fleming, Rod Serling, Winston Churchill just seemed to vital to ever die, but they did -- and relatively young too -- thanks to the booze and cigars. and probably the work and stress too..
