n this day in 1982 The Human League were at No.1 on the UK album chart for with the album Dare. “Dare” must rate as one of the best Synth-pop albums, if not best ever!! Dare is the pinnacle of phase 2 Human League, absolutely jam-packed full of excellent synthesized pop songs. Perfectly produced and really not over-done at all. This was benchmark for sweet harmony electro-pop in the 80’s as it captured the new transition of music perfectly. Here you had post-punks almost Kraftwerkish love with synthesizers meeting harmonic, clinching hooks perfectly suited to the new “club fashion” scene. “Dare” went a different path to the earlier H.L. albums Travelogue and Reproduction, though “I Am The Law” echoes earlier times but for the rest, this was the NEW POP. Dont You Want Me as most of the toons on the rekid needs no introduction, as this was a mega hit. It was the perfect sing-along song and as much as the album held Open Your Heart and The Sound Of The Crowd they were no match for the melodic Dont You Want Me. Phil Oakeys baritone vocals melded perfectly the “new” chicks Joanne Catherall and Susanne Sulley. They sounded and looked good! The rekid has aged beautifully as the aforementioned songs along with “Hard Times”, “Love Action”, “The Things That Dreams Are Made Of” & “Seconds” still sound great. ALSO if you missed it, the Martin Rushent remixed and reproduced album Love And Dancing version of “Dare” is an essential foot tapper. It’s full of 12 instrumental workings of the songs. A DJ’s dream dance-floor rekid. Highly recommended! 10/10 https://youtube/watch?v=1M8a8ox_QeM
