news:“selector spread WIXOSS” Has Kawaii Misery “selector spread WIXOSS” initiates mainly focusing on reminiscence of the previous season’s events. Once again, we find our tragic heroines still trapped in the vicious circle of the card game WIXOSS. Cute heroine Ruuko is who meets us at the start of the episode, still in a state of post-trauma, although she tries to wear in front of her relatives a mask of calmness and cheery moe. What’s striking, she still has her Tetris trauma, where she considers a vertical bar could come and erase away everything she has. In spite of her anxiety and fears, she’s eager to start a new page with her friends Hitoe, now regaining her ability to insert within society and make friends, and Yuzuki, as Hitoe’s LRIG. The episode is not only a reminder of the previous season but also comes with better understanding of what happened after the final battle. In fact, after the last Wixoss fight, opposing Ruuko to Iona, it is shown that Ruuko had actually won the match in terms of power – however, having gained the possibility to make her wish come true thanks to all her previously won battles, Iona has reversed the outcome of the match. Iona’s wish, that was willing to become the LRIG of someone more powerful than her, has turned Ruuko’s victory into defeat, and made Iona take Tama’s place as an LRIG. We still know nothing of the latter, the opening suggestively shows that Tama will come back in a more serious posture and a new war will start between her and Iona to win over Ruuko. It is crystal clear that the tragic history of Wixoss, featuring female teens experiencing excessive menstruation and psychological confusion, drives to be referenced as a second Madoka Magica, which is also based on the same tragic atmosphere and the despair of young girls. What’s more, this second season bread spread would be the spread of Iona’s lustful desires towards Ruuko, very similar to Rebellion’s Homura towards Madoka. Although previously, the comparisons could be overlooked, these inter-female suggestive relationships are making it more difficult to ignore, even if there’s no intended similarity. Indeed, Iona’s mad desire to possess Ruuko and dispossess her of everything reaches Homura’s dementia at the end of the third Madoka Magica movie. In another aspect, Ruuko is pictured as a sinful character, still having the Wixoss fervor boiling in her blood and is secretly willing to battle again to get back Tama and fulfill everyone’s wishes. It is this desire that Iona madly covets, pushing her to sacrifice even her humanity to become the LRIG of the strongest. One may expect that during this season, Ruuko will manage to gather the necessary resources to “come out” and unleash all her burning rage. In this case, the show would undoubtedly respond to the first season’s drawbacks and holes, where tragedy reigned completely over the story’s advancement. What’s more, it has become tiring to follow such a show with over-tragic situations and where the plot’s evolution remains void. One would finally like to see Ruuko in full action, no more bind with her anxieties and fears, and willing to expose her true nature – or “origin”, to quote Araya Souren from the Kara no Kyoukai series. Last but not least, this episode also presents a character that made a brief appearance in the previous season. A candid and puerile Selector, fan of “Batoru”, and who seems to lack the necessary I.Q. to understand the heroines’ alarm on the Wixoss game’s true dangers. The episode was all in all setting the events for this season, not holding much action or development. It’s noticeable that it better explained the facts that took place at the end of the first season. Next episode’s preview shows Akira, the mingy, voracious kinpatsu, will have a comeback. Did she perform cosmetic surgery to mask her facial scar? Either way, one may hope to see more developments in the coming episodes, where the series could ultimately harness all the tragedy it exhibited in the previous season to present a satisfying denouement. Or else… -Kuroyukihime-
