nice find this weekend... :) Chrystoleum pictures of RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania Chrystoleum pictures are (1880s-1910s) An albumen print was glued with gum or paste, face down on the inside of a convex glass plate. When dry, the paper backing was rubbed off until nearly down to the emulsion layer. What was left of the paper was made translucent with a slow drying oil, wax, or varnish. The fine details were then painted on the back of the picture, and when dry, a second convex glass was placed behind the first, this one receiving broad areas of color. RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner, holder of the Blue Riband and briefly the worlds biggest ship. She was launched by the Cunard Line in 1907, at a time of fierce competition for the North Atlantic trade. In 1915 she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat, with the loss of 1198 lives. (RMS = Royal Mail Ship) RMS Mauretania was an ocean liner designed by Leonard Peskett and built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson for the British Cunard Line, and launched on 20 September 1907. She was the worlds largest and fastest ship until the launch of the RMS Olympic in 1911. Mauretania became a favourite among her passengers. After capturing the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing during her 1909 inaugural season, Mauretania held the speed record for twenty years. The ships name was taken from Mauretania, an ancient Roman province on the northwest African coast, not the modern Mauritania which is now to the south.Similar nomenclature was also employed by Mauretanias running mate, Lusitania, which was named after the Roman province directly north of Mauretania, across the Strait of Gibraltar, the region that now is Portugal. One day something from RMS Titanic ????
