now that Im almost exclusively using public transportation or riding my bike to get to work downtown, Im realizing some things. these are all things Ive experienced before to varying degrees. also, countless women before me have expressed these same concerns. theres a direct connection between densely populated areas and frequency of street harassment, of course. more people, more incidents. but as a car owner transitioning to public transportation, Im noticing a higher frequency of incidents now vs. when Im driving. that would make sense too. as the more time I spend on the street, the likelihood of being catcalled is higher. theres something else at play here though. I cant quite put my finger on it. but I know what it is. I have a young face. Im asked all the time what school I attend. Not colleges. Even though I work in a professional environment, I dress by my personality. I hate pantsuits and pants in general. So I look young. Even younger by my face. Men who try to talk to me and ask me what high school I attend? I may be 25, but they dont know that until they ask. They never do. I dont think I look younger than 18 anymore. But I still get asked. Often enough to give me pause about these men that dont ask. Im biased and protective of young girls. So, its possible Im just hyper sensitive. Sick shit happens everyday. So Ill own that bias. Its one thing to harass 25yo me. Its an entirely different ordeal to harass me thinking Im younger than 18. Its not about me at that point.
