npd and infantilism QT Most theorists view NPD as a disorder stemming from the impasse of “separation and individuation” of self. QT2 Cerebral and Somatic narcissists mutually display a “lifelong desire to recapture the paradise lost” (Alford 54) of their childhood. QT3 Research by Gunderson-Roningstam shows that when an individual comes into contact with an obstacle on his or her path of social progression, he or she will revert back to the “infantile-Narcissistic phase”: a kind of primitive coping mechanism (APA 1994). QT4 The dynamic behind secondary narcissism stems from the mother, who represents the child’s “first agent of socialization” (Vaknin 5). The mother shapes one’s sense of self-sufficiency, autonomy, and confidence. She becomes not only an object of dependence, but also a symbol of the childhood universe. In self-development, a healthy individual is able to comfortably seek detachment from the mother, whereas an individual with narcissism cannot undergo differentiation and “no autonomy or coherent self is achieved (Vaknin 5). The end result is a person characterized by dependence and “infantilism” (Vaknin 5).
