ob Vacancy June 24, 2014 at 11:37am Following the need of having a communication officer in the organization, Board has approved vacancy to be filled in under its Programmes Departments. The organization therefore wishes to recruit one (1) suitable person to work in the following position: Communication Officer (1 position) As the Communication Officer at MUHURI you will be responsible for promoting the visibility of our organization in Kenya and worldwide. You will develop MUHURI’s media relations and ensure a conflict sensitive media response. We are looking for someone with excellent communications skills and extensive experience in public relations and media. The Communication Officer will be responsible for transmitting the often complex messages of the organization into an accessible copy for the general public. The ideal candidate brings with him/her established contacts with relevant media outlets and journalists. The successful candidate has strong interpersonal and coordination skills and works well in collaborative processes. The Communication Officer will be reporting directly to the Programmes Manager. The Communication Officer will work closely with the project officers and programmes manager. Terms of Reference Develop, implement and evaluate the communications strategy as well as the media strategy for MUHURI Produce quality content in line with MUHURI’s Strategic Plan and ensure MUHURI’s media work is consistent with the organisation’s strategies Secure and increase MUHURIs media relations by producing quality and timely online and print materials, including press releases, media briefings, editorials, press kits, and short videos Respond to media requests for information, organise press conferences and interviews in cooperation with Executive Director of MUHURI Ensure conflict sensitive media work Provide support and training in all areas of external communications to MUHURI staff to ensure development and implementation of communication plans Edit and supervise the writing, production, translation and dissemination of MUHURI publications, including human interest stories, key advocacy issues, interviews Maintain the website, creating and editing regular, quality content, including photos Update recent reports, news, statistics and other relevant information related to the context of human rights in Kenya Qualifications Advanced university degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field Substantial, relevant experience in journalism or public and media relations in the non-profit sector, ideally on topics of social justice and human rights Track record of editing and writing materials in a variety of styles in line with the agreed organisational messages and defined audiences Demonstrated ability to work and deliver under pressure and tight deadlines in a dynamic environment Proven ability to plan and successfully implement a comprehensive outcome-oriented communications strategy in line with agreed objectives Proven ability to think strategically and analyse diverse information from varied sources Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated capacity to do outreach and work effectively and comfortably with varied stakeholders, including members, human rights organisations, government institutions, networks and grass root groups Experience in conflict sensitive media work and investigative Journalism Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili Skills in photo and video management are an asset Ability to design printed materials with Adobe In Design or Photoshop is an advantage.
