off topic but dismissal related... My daughter is a 3rd grade student at Hutsell Elementary. She takes violin on Mondays right after dismissal until 4:00 pm. We live within the half mile rad. but its more like .75 mile if you do turn by turn. She is listed as a walker but I pick her up across the street from the school. She broke her arm two weeks ago, she was able to take one class because she didnt get her cast until after class, the teacher was absent for last weeks class. At the beginning of yesterdays class the teacher told my daughter that she was not going to be able to do the class because of her cast and she dismissed her at the regular time. I did not get a call or was notified in any way to go pick her up!!! My husband pulls up to the school right before 4:00pm to find her outside by herself walking back to the school. He picked her up and left to go pick up my son from the middle school. I drove to the school to try to talk to someone and I was able to go into the school, walk all over the place, walk into several classrooms, two unattended little girls pointed me in the direction of the music hall. I walked into one classroom where two teachers were talking, they told me the room I was looking for was next door. They didnt think it was odd to see a parent wandering around at that time of the day. I left a note at the teachers desk asking her to call me as soon as possible. I found my daughters violin, picked it up and walked out. Not a single person tried to stop me from walking into the school, asked for my ID, or asked me if I needed anything. First they let a 7yr old go home by herself when the parents think she is in class then a complete stranger can walk all over the school without being questioned. Are our kids safe??? Is this common occurrence on all schools or just our school? I can understand the fact that trying to play the violin with a broken arm would difficult but I cannot understand dismissing her without even the slightest thought as to how she was going to get home when her parents were not scheduled to be there for another 40 minutes. I spoke to the teacher and nonchalantly she informed me that she cannot be responsible for calling parents because she was about to start a class. If she is not responsible, who is?? I understand not having the time to call right then but in that case, dont let the child go!!! sorry for the long, long rant...
