oh my, major drama for several top teams in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying! Rosberg takes pole again but Hamilton had a massive fire from a fuel leak before he could complete a lap in Q1 and will start from pit lane due to switching cars! Kevin Magnussen will also start from pit lane after a freak shower in Q3 hit Turn 1 of the track and caught out several drivers. Rosberg and Button were able to maintain control but Magnussen could not stop and crashed hard into the tire barriers. Trouble at Ferrari as well as they make the latest of many unbelievably stupid blunders that throw away points for Raikkonen. Kimi got knocked out in Q1 by the Marussia of Jules Bianchi after he set his one lap on the medium tires and not running the softs at all. At a track that gains a lot more grip with each lap turned and where it is very difficult to pass, they elected to keep him in the garage for over 10 minutes, hoping that a mediocre car with a best lap on the slower tire was good enough and being shocked when it wasnt. In a development that I consider for the better, this is not the F1 of 4 years ago where the slowest teams on the grid are 5 seconds off the pace, they can be dangerous as we found out. Kimi had repeatedly asked to go out on the soft tire to make sure but was overruled each time and was understandably furious at yet another unnecessary move that makes it almost impossible for him to score points. He has not been having a great season but other people hitting him in races and perhaps the worst strategy on the grid from his engineer have dramatically lowered his point total, it is embarrassing that the most famous racing organization in the world is run like this. Team principal Marco Mattiacci was so angry he would not speak to reporters. Add to that Maldonados Lotus shut off before he could complete a lap, so plenty of action in qualifying. The race will be interesting. Ty Dillon takes his first career Nationwide win at Indy in what turned out to be one of the worst races of the year, nothing happened except for separate strategies that didnt really play out due to a debris caution. So well done Brat #2, his grandfather Richard Childress must be so proud of what he bought for his younger grandson, just a matter of time now until Brat #1 gets his first Cup win, though thats much more expensive. Good run for David Ragan in 13th in the Biagi-Denbeste car and solid finishes for Landon Cassill in 16th and Ryan Sieg in 18th. Elliott still holds a 4 point lead over Smith, 11 over Sadler, and 15 over Dillon who hasnt had a bad race in a while so hes overdue for some bad luck. Elliott still holds a ridiculously large lead in the rookie standings over Dillon. Harvick on pole for The Brickyard 400 but I doubt hell finish there, Jeff second, Montoya 8th shows he really can win this thing, and Logano 9th. Matt Crafton will not make his Cup debut after being slowest in qualifying, not sure what the problem is but RAB Racing is a reasonably strong Nationwide team and they cant get this Cup operation off the ground, also missing the show are Brett Moffitt and David Stremme. I dont follow the Blancpain Endurance Series but their biggest event is underway, the 24 Hours of Spa, and in the first few hours there were 4 massive crashes, a particularly vicious one sent one driver to the hospital by helicopter, no update on the other one involved but there is a video of him going off at Monza earlier in the season about 10 times, so my money is on him causing the accident. The Giants traded a couple of prospects to Boston for Jake Peavy, doubt he will be of any use. New rule in Hall of Fame voting, players will only be on the ballot 10 years to enter Cooperstown before being dropped off, prior to today it was 15. Not sure I like it, but it speeds things up.
