ok... Im going to say it: I was a bit disappointed with Guardians of the Galaxy. ***SPOILER ALERT*** I may talk about things relevant to the plot if you care about that kind of thing... Keep in mind this has nothing to do with source material, I look at movies purely as if they were GOOD MOVIES, not accurate depictions of other works. I just... I feel like they focused WAY too much on characters that I dont care about with boring cliche back stories and missed out on real development.. The character of Drax The Destroyer was completely useless bloat. He was not the strong one as the movie wanted you to believe. They had Groot for that role and he didnt act as comic relief or move the story along any more than any other character. They could have completely removed him and it would not have changed a single thing in the overall plot. A lot of comic book movies come under fire too for depiction of women and this movie fails miserably. yes they tried a thin veil of tough and independent woman on Gamora but she fell completely flat. From the absolute first time she was introduced it was obvious her purpose in life was to fall in love with Star-Lord because... reasons. Groot, while funny, is a huge McGuffin. I almost burst OUT LOUD in the movie, Well of COURSE HE CAN when he started letting out the little light things. He was the little magic plot fixing tool box that provided everything the movie needed so nothing ever really seemed dangerous. Every time there was trouble I just figured Groot would grow some shit out his ass and fix the problem. And their thinly veiled attempt to recreate the, Hulk smashing Loki moment was thinly veiled... All the back stories they spent time explaining and exploring were the SAME DAMN THING. Bad guy killed my family Yes, ok I get it. I dont think every character with this back story needed a solid 10 minutes of monologue to explain it. It was boring and repetitive. My biggest gripe though is how they handled Rocket. Here they have all the other characters having big long share sessions about how something was taken from them and Rocket gets one tiny outburst in a casino. This character is SO INTERESTING and they do NOTHING for him. We have a creature struggling with issues like identity, belonging, self worth, creation... everything that comes with being alive. He didnt ask to be created and he is subjugated for what he is but he doesnt even understand what or who he is to begin understanding why he is hated. it is SO interesting and unique of an angle, and they completely ignore it for NOTHING. his little buddy cop bullshit with Drax is nothing compared to the gold mine they had with him just trying to come to grips with HIMSELF.. So ya, thats been gnawing on me for a while haha
