okay, because this thing will likely never be published even though I do seem to be on track to finish: Someone in the Oort Ice made the spiders, started sending them starward. nobody knows why. they absorb electromagnetic energy, and are thus almost entirely impossible to see, especially in space. they wreck cameras and radios, just by being around, which is the only way to know they are around. so far they have made it to the outer edge of the asteroid belt, after many years of only making rare appearances, becoming a kind of deep space ghost story monsters, that few know about and fewer believe in but the outer planets have aligned. leaving a nice big empty gap to slip through, on their way to the inner planets...
