What makes volume 1 of RCAP useful is the 4 stage model relied upon to convey the history of the relationship between Indigenous Nations and the Nation State called Canada: 1. Separate Worlds; 2. Contact and Co-operation; 3. Displacement and Assimilation; and 4. Negotiation and Renewal. RCAP was written for ordinary people rather than academics, political scientists, or historians, and in this way it is written in a very accessible style. Once you finish reading volume 1 you will be better prepared to then understand how it is that Canada’s colonial history and the violation of treaties continue to this day.
