on the third page of saturday november two, twenty-thirteen vol no. one-zero-nine-four of the weekly spectator (ghana), was a story dear to my heart under the caption: pay me or go mad! fetish priest threatens pastor - the story continued: speaking on fox fms nyasemhweprogramme last monday, nana obinim (the fetish priest), alleged that one pastor justice abankwa of the abuakwa koforidua branch of the #methodistchurchghana visited him about two years ago at his shrine requesting that he helped him to win #multitude of members into a #church he intended to establish in #accra. as is typical of #fetish #priests, he prepared some charms and other concoctions, put them in a gourd and placed it in a briefcase for pastor abankwa, who after collecting it, failed to fulfil his part of the contract, two years thereafter. these were the contract terms: -- pastor abankwa sought extra unchristian help in the form of charms, concoctions and other stuff to boost membership of a yet to be established church in the heart of ghanas capital city - accra. -- pastor abankwa is to pay two thousand and five hundred ghana cedis each year after the charms and the other stuff had been prepared and handed over to him. -- at the end of each year, the substance should be returned for fortification at the shrine etc etc etc. why my interest in this story? - in the early eighties when i was a young man, i used to visit opera cinema theatre with my cousin Johnson Hlordzi for the twelve noon cinema shows. opera cinema was then one of the places to be, if one needed to be up-to-date with the current movies (especially indian and chinese and particularly james bond thrillers) making the rounds at the theatres. i recollect how we used to encounter charlatans, magicians, lotto-number professors, hirelings claiming to be prophets, complete ahzah soothsayers making brisk business in and around the kinbu gardens and its environs - they mostly stage-manage most of their theatrics and able to hoodwink the gullible into parting with their hard-earned cash. however, over the years, as churches began to engage the attention of most ghanaians, especially in the face of challenging socio-economic difficulties, most of the above characters varnished into thin air only to resurface in our churches, sadly. in this mould emerged jesus of dzorwulu and his twelve disciples. what fetish priest obinims story indicates is that all that glitters may not be gold after all. i will dare say it, without any fear of contradictions whatsoever, that most of the characters i listed above are now operating under the cloak of the cassock and clericals. they may be your neighbourhood: .tongue-speaking osofo .your trusted prophet/prophetess .your latest miracle worker .your instant diviner .your early morning preacher .your market square comedian with bible in one hand and white handkerchief in the other .even your bespectacled bishop/oversear/senior kominini etc etc .dont take out your television evangelists and even those who seem to predict to the last dot happenings in your life. was i shocked reading about this pastor justice abankwa who claimed to be linked with the methodist church, wanting to establish his own church and seeking extra help from a fetish priest for membership? not in the least. these are all agents of the enemy - goats in sheep clothing - wolves in domesticated bulldogs skins - seeking to lead many innocent and yet trusting people to the pit of hell. until we begin to cultivate the habit of reading the bible and seeking understanding through the assistance of the holy spirit, we will fall prey to such tainted slots of the devil who are being empowered massively to help rake innocent souls into the captivity of abosam-fireman! i will encourage fetish priest nana obinim to expose pastor joshua abankwa and his ilk more often; and not wait over two years to threaten such exposures: dont even demand the cash any longer, just carry through your threat: let him go mad! let those who have eyes, ears and the ability to read and understand, take caution.
