on the whole No Star Arts Grant thingy - I dont know very much about the persons background, nor should it be dreadfully relevant. The title is in ill taste, perhaps. But its money to the arts from a non-G source. Who is putting no small amount of money where her mouth is. All power to that, in my book. But it set me thinking - a while ago I mentioned I had ~$2k to spare for a publishing collab project from a leftover grant. I was swarmed with interesting ideas within the space of a few days. People out there want to write things, and perhaps a small chunk of change would push them past the tipping point from idea to action. Ive actually mentally committed the $2k and a bit more of my own cash to two of those projects, because I couldnt decide, and Ive sent another $5k out to reprints, and put yet more of the original grant money into ALWCA and SPWM... but its actually not money down the drain as I get books in return, which I can sell at cheap prices to students for... yet more money... which can find yet another new home. Perhaps I should just pull a Eng Kai Er and commit $1k a month, or rather, $3k quarterly, for a _____ (no good title yet) Publishing Grant. Ill send out an open call for book ideas / manuscripts, then publish the best idea once per quarter. Except this isnt a grant per se because Ill claim my pound of flesh in books, which I can then re-sell to fund the next grant... though I am financially prepared to lose $1k a month as a worst case. Would this be something people would submit for?
