one of the benefits of living in southern illinois is the wide variety of wildlife. every morning at work i get to watch the silly turkeys pecking about for that juicy bug, the sly coyotes creeping in the shadows and the regal deer flickering their tails as they graze in the dew moistened grass. near the building is a wide and tall old oak tree. its sturdy limbs stretch out far to the sides and almost seems to just barely graze the clouds with a strength and steadfastness that lasts through whatever storms come its way. upon closer inspection of this natural statue of strength are a rainbow of different types of butterflies. the butterflies will flutter about, dance in the suns rays and even leave for a bit to places i can only imagine. perhaps there are some nearby wild flowers that i cannot see. however it seems that wherever they flutter about to they appear to come back to that tree. then they will slowly fan their delicate wings to cool off, dance again in the sun and cool themselves in the shade. there is an insight here into people i believe. i think i understand the pain and dismay a female feels when abandoned by a prominent male figure in her life. little girls looking up toward their father, young woman to their boyfriends and married woman to their husbands. i think as men we should recognize the fragility of women is their strength. it is the mans strength as well. i realize there are exceptions to this, but as a general rule i think it is true. i will also submit that people, male and female search for strength in their life. when there is nothing to cling to in the storm, rest upon after our daily dance in the sun people will try to fill that void with things that appear strong but in reality bend whenever the wind blows, much like the grass on the prairie. therefore, it is our happiness when we do find stability in our lives. whether it be in our relationship with our self, our family or our God. when we have this strength that we can hold onto, it gives us peace. it is my wish for all my friends and family to be as fortunate as the butterflies residing on charles street and to be a bit more exact, that old oak tree.
