one of the few radical white heroes of the United States, John Brown declared war on the slaveowning South at a time when most abolitionists were busy sitting and talking to each other in parlors. He built a cross-racial guerrilla unit of freed slaves and abolitionist whites and invaded Kansas (see also: Bleeding Kansas) and eventually Virginia, where he attempted to lay siege to a military outpost and town.
