one of those reflective weekends ey, especially since the retirement of dj nyd is not too far off (not any time soon, but its definitely on the cards). To celebrate this heres an essay. I was actually devastated that not many people got to get a photo with the big man on friday night especially some of the key people that made this happen, that made me feel pretty bad about getting this photo in the end, I definitely consider myself lucky for this as Im a massive T-Pain fan. After his show, he went upstairs and I continued to dj (cough cough play a recording for a bit while I grabbed a drink, the way these usually go is after the artist finishes its usually a skeleton crowd). I noticed he surprisingly came back down and just chilled on stage - didnt allow photos with anyone (may be due to his management adding a level of complexity to everything, not sure). I ran back, if the artist is on stage there is no way I could let a recording play. He was sitting on stage while I djd, he watched me play a few tracks and had a pretty funny look on his face so motioned for him to come behind the decks, he ended up djing for about half an hour. I then asked him for a photo, he obliged, his head security guard came running up to grab my phone and take the photo for me. This was reflective, as over the past 2 years Ive played support or after party sets for somewhere between 25 - 30 artists, majority of them international, and on Friday I started thinking back to how this all has come about as I count myself lucky for these opportunities. The main reasons I get these sets that I could come up with are: a) Im good at what I do when it comes to djing, may be not the best technically but I can hold my own when it comes to track selection and keeping a crowd hyped b) I carry enough ego to get shit done whether its behind the decks or operationally / production management - no more, no less than necessary. People that know me know what this means. Just ask sef lol. c) I take my djing seriously. I was never part of the cool crowd or able to market myself as the hottest thing in Melbourne when it comes to djing, I wouldnt dare due to the fact that there are so many great djs that came before me, that are still around, and definitely deserve those titles. I just do what I do, somewhat quietly, but I do take it seriously - Ive spent more time working on my skills than working on my photo shoots. none of these reasons mean much without this one: d) Promoters. Without the promoters putting on these shows, where would we be? On a weekly basis they keep us employed as djs, and for these bigger gigs they reward us by putting us up in front of hundreds / thousands of people. Ive had the pleasure of working with many great promoters, but most of all Richard Dir-X and Aj Yadav have looked after me for the majority of my urban career. Friday was a testament to their dedication towards putting on great shows, and along with Lukas Dell and Charles Fernandez they presented one of the most energetic performances ive seen in a long time. My sincerest thanks to you guys for putting me on, it was absolute pleasure as it has always been for your shows, and I will continue to bring my a-game every time - these shows always motivate me to hit the decks at home and keep practicing :) I was looking at the crowd on Friday before T Pain came on, while Sherlok Black Pearl and I did our thing on stage and realised that all these people were in the same room to see the same artist and all of this shit came together because a group of promoters but their time, effort, money and balls on the line behind the scenes to bring it all together. We all do this for the same reasons, we want to make money, we want to build names for ourselves, but first and foremost we love music - and bring an artist to their fan base in a country like Australia is no easy effort. Hats off to all the promoters that are keeping the urban industry in Australia going and bringing down the artists that we all want to see live, and once again a big thank you to Clublife Entertainment, C4 Promotions, MyRNB, Lukas, Charles, and everyone involved in Friday night. On to the next one boys.
