A brush with a winter storm tonight into Wednesday morning. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Special weather statement ended for: Oxford - Brant Belleville - Quinte - Northumberland Kingston - Prince Edward. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==discussion== A low pressure system just southeast of New Orleans is beginning To track northeast and is expected to intensify into a winter Storm as it moves up along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States tonight and into New England on Wednesday. These regions tend to be on the western fringe of the snow shield from such winter storms, And this East Coast winter storm is no exception. Wet snow associated with this system is expected to overspread the regions near Lake Erie and Ontario by early this evening then over remaining areas later this evening. Along the shoreline of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie the precipitation will likely begin as rain or a rain-wet snow mix. However as northerly winds start to pump in colder air from the Arctic, the precipitation will change over to All snow by Wednesday morning. Total snowfall amounts will range from just a couple centimetres Over western sections and immediately along the shoreline of Lake Ontario in the Toronto to Hamilton areas, to near 10 cm in parts of Niagara and a swath of areas extending from the Durham region northeast across Peterborough to Eastern Algonquin Park. East of these regions a significantly heavier snowfall is expected and snowfall warnings are in effect for tonight and Wednesday. Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions tonight and Wednesday and allow for extra time to reach their destination. Travel into Eastern Ontario and neighbouring new York state is not recommended as heavier snow is expected and warnings are in effect there. The morning commute will likely be affected. Environment Canada is closely monitoring the Progress of this winter storm. Small deviations in the exact track of this storm centre may result in significant changes in the amount of snow that falls tonight into Wednesday. Should the storm centre track just a little closer to the regions, snowfall warnings may be required. The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
